Agafay Desert, the Stone Desert 40 km from Marrakech

The Agafay desert is a plateau of bare, stony hills about 40 km south-west of Marrakech, with the High Atlas on the horizon and no sand dunes. It is close enough for a sunset dinner or a night at a camp without a long drive, which makes it the easiest desert to add to a stay in Marrakech.

Where is the Agafay desert?

The Agafay desert lies south-west of Marrakech, between the city and the foothills of the High Atlas, not far from the Lalla Takerkoust lake. The drive takes 45 minutes to an hour. Most camps sit on the ridges, looking over bare hills to the mountains, which are white with snow in winter.

The road leaves Marrakech to the south-west and climbs onto the plateau past the Lalla Takerkoust lake. The last part to most camps is a dirt track, fine for an ordinary car in dry weather. Our driver picks you up at your riad or hotel and brings you back the next morning.

Agafay desert or the Sahara?

Agafay is a stone desert of bare, rolling hills, with no sand dunes. It is close, so you can go for an evening or one night and be back in Marrakech the next morning.

The Sahara dunes at Zagora, Merzouga or Erg Chigaga need at least two days from Marrakech, and three for the high dunes. If you have the time, see our desert tours from Marrakech; if you have one free evening, Agafay is the easy choice.
