Morocco Travel Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

Practical Morocco travel tips and answers to the questions we are asked most, about booking, paying, the desert and travelling in Morocco.

Booking and payment

Yes. Every tour is private: the vehicle and the driver are for your group only, and the guides too when the tour includes them. You choose the dates and we can change the route for you.

Choose a tour and send an enquiry with your dates and the number of travellers. We reply by email with availability and a quote. When a tour has online booking, you can also book it straight away with a deposit.

The deposit is 20% of the tour price. You pay it through PayPal, with a card or a PayPal account; you do not need a PayPal account to pay by card. The rest is paid on the first day of the tour.

If you cancel 30 days or more before the tour starts, we refund the whole deposit. After that the deposit is kept. See our Cancellation Policy for the details.

The price depends on the size of your group, your dates and the hotels and camps you prefer. Send us those details and we reply with an exact price.

Yes. Tell us where you would like to go, how many days you have and how you like to travel, and we plan a route for you. See Tailor-made Trips.

We strongly recommend insurance that covers medical care and cancellation. It is your responsibility to have it before you travel.

On the tour

Most tours start at your riad or hotel in Marrakech, and we can also collect you from the airport. Some tours start in Casablanca, Tangier, Fes, Agadir, Essaouira, Ouarzazate or Zagora.

A private vehicle for your group with a professional driver. Tours to Erg Chigaga use a 4×4, because the last part of the way is a desert track.

You sleep in a tent at a camp in the dunes, with dinner and breakfast. Standard camps have simple tents and shared washrooms. Luxury camps have large tents with proper beds and a private bathroom.

Light clothes for the day, a warm layer for desert nights, a hat, sunglasses, sun cream and comfortable shoes. For the desert, a small bag for the camp is enough; your main luggage stays in the vehicle.

Yes. Tell us their ages and we plan shorter driving days, stops and activities that suit them.

Yes. Tell us when you book and we pass your food needs on to the hotels and camps on your route.

Morocco travel tips

Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is easier to reach by road and has more camps and things to do around it. Erg Chigaga, past M’hamid, is reached by 4×4, has fewer camps and feels more remote. Erg Chebbi suits a route to Fes; Erg Chigaga fits well with the Draa Valley and the coast.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable. In summer the desert is very hot in the daytime. In winter the days are mild and sunny, but nights in the desert are cold and snow can close the High Atlas passes for a day or two.

Yes, if you have at least two days. On the way you cross the High Atlas and see Aït Benhaddou and the palm valleys, and a night at a camp in the dunes is quiet and dark in a way few places are. With three days or more you reach the high dunes of Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga. Compare the routes on our desert tours from Marrakech page.

The nearest dunes, near Zagora, are about 360 km away, roughly seven hours of driving. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are about 560 km away, nine to ten hours, so a trip there takes at least three days. The Agafay desert, 40 km from Marrakech, is a stony desert without dunes.

Many nationalities, including citizens of the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia, can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days. Check the rules for your passport with your government before you travel.
