This imperial cities tour from Marrakech spends a week on Morocco’s four royal capitals, starting and ending in Marrakech. You see Rabat, Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, spend three nights in a Fes riad and come back by the Ouzoud waterfalls.
Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech were each a capital of Morocco at one time. All four have an old medina and royal buildings, and a local guide shows you round.
You stay in riads and hotels chosen for comfort and location, inside or close to the old towns. The way back to Marrakech follows the Middle Atlas, with a night near the Ouzoud waterfalls.
How the seven days go, from your pickup in Marrakech to the drop-off.
A guided day in the Marrakech medina.
North to Casablanca to see the Hassan II Mosque, then on to Rabat for the Kasbah of the Oudayas in the late afternoon.
An early start to Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, then on to Fes.
A full day in Fes el-Bali with a local guide.
A free day in Fes. Chefchaouen is possible as a long day trip if you want to see it.
South along the Middle Atlas by Ifrane, Azrou and Beni Mellal to the Ouzoud waterfalls.
A morning at the falls, then about three hours back to Marrakech.
We pick you up at your riad or hotel in Marrakech at the time you choose. If your riad is in a lane cars cannot enter, the driver waits at the nearest square or gate and someone from the riad walks you there.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) suit a trip that covers the mountains, the desert and the cities. Winter works with warm layers, and summer is hot inland.
Clothes for warm days and cool evenings, a warm jacket for any desert night, comfortable shoes, clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the medinas, and a small bag for the camp night.
Carry cash in dirhams for entrance fees, lunches and tips, since cards are not taken everywhere outside the cities. Driving days vary, so we plan stops for photos, tea and lunch along the way. Dress modestly in villages and medinas, and ask before you photograph people. Phone signal is good in towns and weaker in the mountains and the desert.
Prices are per person and depend on the size of your group. You book with a 20% deposit by card or PayPal and pay the balance on the first day of the tour.
If you cancel 30 days or more before the start, we refund the deposit in full; after that the deposit is kept. You can change the date once for free if you ask 14 days or more before. The details are in our Cancellation Policy.
Marrakech, Fes, Meknes and Rabat, the four cities that were capitals of Morocco under different dynasties. Rabat is the capital today.
Fes el-Bali is large and best seen over two days with a guide, and the third night leaves time for a rest or a day out before the drive back.
